The Experimental Cook

The other day I saw something on Pinterest that I thought was as cool as sliced bread – Cinnamon Roll Waffles. Doesn’t that look just scrumptious.

CinnamonRollWafflesThe recipe on Pillsbury’s website was easy as 1-2-3. (Click here for recipe.) Here is my attempt at this simple and tasty breakfast treat.

IMG_2165Start with one can of Pillsbury Grands! Cinnabon Cinnamnon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing.

Open can and preheat waffle iron.

IMG_2168Place cinnamon roll in center of waffle square. Cook for 3-5 minutes, until golden brown. Now that is a bit challenging becasue how can you tell if they are golden brown without opening the waffle iron. If you open the waffle iron too soon, you have a gooey mess. I opened the waffle iron when the indicator changed from red to green.

Make the glaze by putting the cream cheese icing in a bowl. Add 1 cup powdered sugar, 3 Tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Whisk until smooth and pourable. (Note – that is adding a lot of sweet to an already sweet glaze. I added just enough milk to thin the original icing.)

Here is my result. We decided this was just OK, but not a ‘have again’.

IMG_2169My wife decided the cinnamon roll waffle was not as good as traditional a cinnamon roll because the waffle did not have a soft center as a real cinnamon roll would have.

I decided the problem was I am not a food stylist. Food stylist? Yes, food stylist. You see, practically all photos found of food prepared in professional kitchens are the result of food stylists. Their job is to make the food look tasty. Take another look. Which would you prefer to taste, the photo on the left or the photo on the right?

I would choose the one on the left. But I also agree with my wife; cinnamon rolls should be round and have a soft center. If you want waffles, just make regular waffles.

Thanks for stopping by, y’all come back now.

  1. Yea, I’m with you. Don’t think this would be for us. Hope you are keeping warm there. We will be near Corpus on Friday. Too bad won’t be seeing you two there this year.

  2. I tried to post a few min ago, if this is a duplicate, sorry. Wanted to tell you you can have cinnamon roll waffles by adding 1/2 tsp (i don’t measure) and a bunch of pecans to the waffle batter and wa-la! It is really good. Happy New Year
