Dream Reader

That is the goal for assignment #4 in Blogging101:Zero to Hero. When I first read the details of the assignment, I thought, Dream Reader? Who in the world would my dream reader be?

Here is what Aditya Solanki, one of my classmates, posted on Twitter this morning.

The assignment description included a “Why do this?” hint.

  • Writing with a specific reader in mind is a great way to focus your thoughts.
  • Exploring new elements and post styles adds more tools to your storytelling toolbox.
  • Publishing different types of posts and media adds visual interest and keeps people reading.

I am taking the approach of thinking about my target audience.

In my last pre-retirement work, I was an Education Manager. Part of my work was helping our employees solve computer application issues. I used the tag line – Aiming to please, sometimes hitting the mark. – in my email signature. It included the image of this guy tossing an arrow at a target. (Not sure why the animation does not work on this image, it did in my email.) Most of the time, I was able to hit the mark.

So who is my target audience? Who am I trying to reach? I have two specific groups of people in mind. First group is family and friends. Part of the reason I write thsi blog is so our family and friends can keep up with us. Back in the day before computers, people would call on the telephone or write letters. That media made communication personal. Unless you held a conference call, where everyone got in on the conversation; or if you included a copy of you Christmas letter when mailing Christmas cards to friends and family. Social media has replaced most conversations formerly conducted by telephone or mail.

The other large audience group is filled with RVers. Before my wife and I embarked on the dream of ours, we met a large number of RVers through social media. And, over the last three years, we have met many great people in various places. They are now in our RVing circle. When we meet new folks as we travel, it is easy to give them our blog address so they can discover who we are.

Our dream reader probably changes each day. New friends, new family members, new RVers hopefully take an interest in reading our blog. We include our blog address on our business cards which we had out frequently. RVers, in particular, build a large network of other RVers who share common interests. Also, RVers rely on RVers for recommendations and opinions, just as folks living in houses depend on their circle of friends and neighbors.

We want our readers to tell others about our blog. Knowing who our dream reader is helps us with that. For the personal family conversations, we still rely on phones, skype, and messaging. For the general conversations, we will continue using our blog.

I learned a few things from writing this post today.

The 2nd bullet point in the instructions said to ‘explore new elements and post styles’. I learned how to embed a Twitter tweet and to embed an image directly from a web source. That is cool. I like learning new things.
