I really like the weather in Virginia. Actually, I should say I like the weather in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. This afternoon, I decided to break the norm and enjoy the outdoors where we have beautiful weather 76F (24.5C) and very few people in the RV park. Here is my view from the picnic table while staring at the blank screen on my Mac, waiting for the fog to lift.
O Motivator, Motivator, wherefore art thou Motivator?
I searched for links related to “Breaking Writer’s Block. Sheesh only 575,000 links. That means I am in good company. Or that means people who have nothing to write about write about how to break writers block. Since Google puts the most relevant link at the top, I’ll look at the top three. Surly, I will find my motivator there.
McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: Breaking Through Writer’s Block
Up pops an article written by John Warner. It looks like a quick and easy read. Let’s see what Mr. Warner has to say –
Symptoms of the Block: You know that you have the next Great American Novel burbling inside of you, one so brilliant that it would make Philip Roth trade his pen for a box of fingerpaints, but you just can’t seem to get anything on the page.
Likely Cause of the Block: You are lazy.
Throughout your life, have your parents, teachers, bosses, or significant others called you a shiftless good-for-nothing who will never amount to anything? Was your last shower more than three days ago? Do you earn less than $20,000 a year? If so, you’re most likely lazy.
W H A T ? How insulting! Now, I am not lazy; I just need a good kick in the back side to get me moving.

@Lifehack Article: Breaking Through Writer’s Block
Author Thursday Bram (Really! That’s the author’s name) says I can overcome ‘writer’s block in just a few easy steps.’
- Do some research
- Seek inspiration
- Work on supplemental material
– and a few more encouraging suggestions.
That’s more like it.
Number three on the list from Google looks like a link to a sales related site – so I’ll skip that and go to number 4.
20 Tips For Breaking Through Writer’s Block
Surly, you are kidding me. Twenty steps? Do I really need 20 steps to get this fog lifted? I hope not.
I think I will go fix the pool pump, then I will get back to blog writing. Seriously!
The pool pump seized up on Saturday at our RV park. My job here is to keep things running smoothly. Considering we have a weekend coming up and the pool water is an algae green color, our RV campers will not be happy campers if we do not get the pool cleared up by the weekend (2 days away).
Wish me luck. I’ll be back.
Thanks for stopping by, y’all come back now.
Jerry, I feel you pain with the writer’s block. With the summer I’ve had I could fill a book and I haven’t posted once. I’m going to have to get back into posting once we head south this fall. Always enjoy you posts.
Thanks Dave. Sounds like you’ve been pretty busy. I know being tired makes rest a priority over blog writing.
Talked with my resident writer. He says to go back and re read what you have already written. Choose 4 or 5 ideas. You may find one that’s particularly useful to give you ideas. You may find more than one and have to decide which one to choose.
Thanks. I think part of it has to do with being tired. My work is pretty demanding and when I get off, I am drained. I will look at my past posts to see which ones generated traffic. Hope you guys are doing well.
Welcome to the club Jerry! I already posted something this week – once. Does that make me ahead of the game? Believe it or not I was just sitting here scrolling through my WP reader and was thinking, “I already did write on Monday. You mean I have to do it again?” At least we are on the same page with this writers block. It too shall pass. ~Elle
It is good to know I have a supportive WP friend.
